Spain proposes port digitalization and decarbonization partnership with New York and New Jersey
Spain's Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has proposed a collaboration with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) focused on port digitalization and decarbonization.
During a meeting in New York with PANYNJ Sustainability Director Christopher Diamond, Puente suggested establishing a structured dialogue between PANYNJ and Spain's Puertos del Estado. The proposed cooperation covers port governance, investment planning, operational excellence, and public-private partnerships for large infrastructure programs.
Key areas for decarbonization include shore-to-ship electricity supply, terminal equipment electrification, clean energy supply, energy efficiency, and the design of climate-resilient port infrastructure. Additionally, the parties discussed exchanging expertise regarding digital ports and logistics chain visibility, leveraging Spain's experience with Port Community Systems and the SIMPLE platform alongside PANYNJ's data-driven operations.
