Spain public employment exams face high failure rates and strict security

Public employment examinations in Spain are facing significant challenges regarding candidate performance and security. In recent years, primary education competitive exams have seen high failure rates, with some regions reporting that over 87% of applicants fail the first written test. Examiners have noted alarming deficiencies in basic skills, including poor syntax, reading comprehension, and frequent spelling and grammar errors among candidates who have completed extensive schooling.

In Galicia, a recent recruitment process for 256 public positions saw approximately 16,000 applicants. The exams featured unprecedented anti-cheating measures, including the use of technology to detect radio frequencies, electromagnetic fields, and ferromagnetic materials. Authorities implemented strict protocols where possessing prohibited electronic devices, such as mobile phones or smartwatches, can lead to immediate expulsion and annulment of the exam, even if the devices are turned off.
