Spain pushes ‘slow tourism’ as social media and low‑cost flights reshape travel trends

Spain’s official tourism portal has adopted the term “slow tourism,” promoting travel experiences that are slower, experience‑focused and aimed at spreading visitors away from the three overcrowded regions of Catalonia, the Canary Islands and the Balearics. Marketers and travel influencers, such as @simplyslowtraveler with over a million Instagram followers, are highlighting rural and lesser‑known destinations – for example the Sierra Cebollera in La Rioja – as authentic, low‑impact alternatives. The strategy is presented as a way to support local communities and promote sustainable growth, although critics note that most tourists still rely on air travel and that the “slow” model may remain accessible mainly to affluent travelers.

At the same time, a broader European trend is emerging in 2024, driven by low‑cost airlines and the rapid spread of images on Instagram and TikTok. Previously obscure locations across the Mediterranean and other regions are seeing sudden visitor spikes, boosting local economies but also creating pressure on infrastructure, services and the environment. The combined effect of affordable flights and social‑media promotion is reshaping traveler expectations toward more authentic and customized experiences, while policymakers grapple with balancing growth and sustainability.
