Adif and Renfe face scrutiny over political appointments and safety

Spain's railway infrastructure manager, Adif, and operator, Renfe, are facing intense scrutiny following two major accidents in Adamuz and Urda, which have resulted in at least 115 deaths. Investigations and reports have highlighted concerns regarding the alleged politicization of leadership roles within both companies.

Reports indicate that approximately twenty individuals with ties to the PSOE, Óscar Puente, or Ximo Puig have been appointed to key positions in Renfe and Adif. Critics argue that these appointments prioritize political loyalty over technical expertise, potentially compromising railway safety. One job applicant for Adif alleged that positions were being reserved for the children and relatives of union members.

In response to the accidents, Renfe has issued a statement distancing itself from responsibility, attributing track maintenance and infrastructure management exclusively to Adif. Meanwhile, railway controllers through the Sindicato de Circulación Ferroviario (SCF) are preparing a strike and questioning the transparency of leaked audio recordings related to the Urda incident.

Professional bodies, including the Col·legi d'Enginyers de Camins, Canals i Ports de Catalunya, are calling for a state pact to reform Adif. They propose implementing minimum four-year mandates for directors to ensure stability and prioritizing technical merit in selection processes to prevent frequent leadership changes.
