Spain ramps up Asian hornet removal as attacks surge in Vitoria and O Salnés

An Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) incident was reported in the Zerio neighborhood of Vitoria, where several residents were attacked on a wooden‑decked porch. Local authorities provided only brief official statements, leaving unanswered questions about the number of victims, medical treatment, and follow‑up prevention measures.

In Galicia’s O Salnés comarca, the inter‑municipal control service intensified its response, removing about 200 hornet nests in a single week and over 450 since the campaign began in April. The team, equipped with specialized cranes, long reach tools and precision firearms, aims to map nest locations and deploy thousands of traps to curb the expanding infestation along the region’s borders.
