Spain ranks fourth in EU dairy cow productivity

Spain has become the fourth most productive EU member state regarding dairy cow yields, surpassing major powers such as Germany and the Netherlands. Over the last two decades, Spanish milk production per cow has risen from 6,200 kilograms annually in 2004 to nearly 10,000 kilograms today.

This increase in productivity has occurred despite a reduction of approximately 244,000 dairy cows in Spain since 2005. The growth is attributed to advancements in genetics, animal nutrition, welfare, milking systems, and technology. Currently, only Denmark, Finland, and Estonia maintain higher yields, ranging between 10,200 and 10,500 kilograms per animal.

In Spain, the region of Galicia serves as the primary driver of the sector, accounting for 42% of national production and 56% of the country's dairy farms. Galicia has established itself as the ninth largest milk-producing region in Europe.
