Spain records 183 heat‑related deaths as July heat wave ends

Spain’s fourth heat wave of the year, lasting from July 29 to 31, ended with temperatures of 40‑42 °C in the southeast. The national meteorological agency AEMET reported 183 heat‑related deaths on the final day. The MoMo mortality‑monitoring system of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III estimates that, since May, excess deaths attributable to the heat total about 3,129, including 1,944 among people over 65 years old in July.

In Mexico’s Baja California Sur, the state health secretary Ana Luisa Guluarte Castro said that, to date in 2026, 66 medical incidents have been linked to extreme temperatures, with two confirmed heat‑stroke deaths and one case under judicial review. Authorities are urging the public to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, wear light clothing and use shade, especially for children and older adults.
