Spain records high road fatality rates in Huelva and top accident‑prone cities

A recent analysis of the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) data identified the 15 Spanish cities with the highest number of traffic accidents per 10,000 inhabitants. The ranking, based on 2023 figures and limited to municipalities with over 50,000 residents, shows that some urban centres experience accident rates that double or triple the national average, driven by urban structure, car dependence and road network characteristics.

In the province of Huelva, twelve people have died in road accidents over the first half of 2024, according to provisional DGT statistics. Fatal incidents occurred roughly every two weeks on inter‑urban roads such as the A‑494, including a collision that killed a 16‑year‑old motorcyclist in July and several other deadly crashes involving cars, a cyclist and a motorcyclist. The series of accidents highlights the elevated risk on certain Spanish roads despite overall national trends.
