Extreme heat causes record deaths in Spain and diverse health risks
Extreme heatwaves are causing significant mortality and a wide range of health complications. In Spain, the Daily Mortality Monitoring system (MoMo) reports that over 5,000 people have died from heat-related causes between May 15 and August 24, 2026. This figure sets a new record, surpassing previous highs in 2022 and 2025. The impact is heavily concentrated among older populations, with 97% of these deaths occurring in individuals aged 65 and older.
Beyond heatstroke and dehydration, a study published in Science Advances highlights that extreme temperatures are linked to more than 30 different medical diagnoses. Analyzing nearly one million emergency room visits in Chicago from 2011 to 2023, researchers identified significant increases in conditions such as multiple sclerosis flare-ups, acute kidney failure, skin rashes, and mental or behavioral disorders. The research also suggests a correlation between extreme heat and an increase in physical trauma, including assaults and firearm-related incidents. Experts warn that focusing only on well-known heat illnesses may lead to underestimating the true public health burden and overlooking vulnerable communities, particularly in urban areas affected by the heat island effect.
