Spain records record absenteeism in León and rise in foreign‑worker registrations

Absenteeism in the Spanish province of León has reached historic levels, with the latest Adecco report showing a 7.68% absence rate – up 0.42 points year‑on‑year – equating to more than 19 million lost work hours and an estimated cost exceeding €125 million for the year. The report links the increase mainly to higher rates of temporary medical leave, an aging workforce and growing mental‑health issues.

At the same time, the number of foreign‑national workers registered with Spain’s Social Security continues to climb, reaching 3.391 million in May – 15.16% of the total employed population. Morocco tops the list with 421 549 affiliates, followed by Romania, Colombia, Venezuela and Italy. The hospitality sector employs the most foreign workers (604 966), with commerce and construction also showing high foreign‑worker concentrations.
