Tarragona mourns three teens drowning at Arrabassada beach
On 19 June 2026, six adolescents jumped from the rocks at the Arrabassada beach in Tarragona despite a yellow warning flag indicating hazardous sea conditions. Three managed to reach the shore on their own, while the other three were rescued by emergency services after struggling against strong currents.
A 12‑year‑old boy died on the spot despite resuscitation attempts, and two 13‑year‑olds succumbed to their injuries in Hospital Joan XXIII later that weekend. The rescue operation involved the regional emergency medical system (SEM), a medical helicopter, firefighters, the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Red Cross and maritime rescue units.
The city held an official minute of silence in the Plaza de la Font, declared three days of mourning, and flew flags at half‑mast. Catalonia’s president, Salvador Illa, and Tarragona’s mayor, Rubén Viñuales, attended the ceremony alongside other regional officials, sports councillors and religious leaders. Psychological support teams were deployed to assist families, friends and witnesses.
Authorities urged the public to respect safety warnings, especially the prohibition on swimming in rocky zones, to prevent similar tragedies.
