Cambrils beach drowning kills 47-year-old Senegalese man, Catalonia death count reaches ten

A 47‑year‑old man of Senegalese nationality died after drowning on Friday night at the Prat d’En Forés‑Regueral beach in Cambrils, Tarragona. Four ambulances from the emergency medical system arrived, but resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful and the death was confirmed as a cardiac arrest. The beach was not under lifeguard surveillance at the time, and red and yellow warning flags were flying because of poor sea conditions.

The incident brings the number of beach deaths in Catalonia to ten since the official swimming season began on 15 June. Spain’s overall drowning toll this year exceeds 200, with 472 deaths recorded in 2025 and 471 in 2024. Recent fatalities also include a 75‑year‑old man who drowned at Valencia’s Malvarrosa beach and a 60‑year‑old who died in a pool in Ibiza. Authorities are urging the public to heed safety warnings, avoid swimming without supervision, and respect beach flag signals.

Protecció Civil of the Generalitat has reiterated the importance of extreme precaution at beaches, pools and inland waters throughout the summer season.
