Spain records warmest September on record
Spain has experienced its warmest September since official records began in 1961. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the average temperature for the month reached 22.5 ºC, representing a significant anomaly of +3.4 ºC compared to the 1991-2020 reference period.
In a historic first, the average temperature for September exceeded the average climatic temperature of the entire summer period, which was set at 22.1 ºC. The month was characterized by multiple heatwaves, including an official heatwave across the peninsula and Balearic Islands between September 2 and 7, as well as three distinct heatwaves in the Canary Islands.
Extreme temperatures were recorded across various stations, with Morón de la Frontera reaching 44.4 ºC and Sevilla/Aeropuerto hitting 44 ºC. Additionally, 18 major stations reported record-breaking high minimum temperatures for the month, contributing to an overall extremely warm character across much of the country.
