Spain recycling sector faces export risks and circular economy shifts
The recycling sector in Spain and Europe is facing significant challenges regarding waste management and market access. The Spanish Federation of Recovery and Recycling (FER) has expressed concern over potential restrictions on the export of ferrous and non-ferrous recycled metals to non-OECD countries. FER warns that limiting these exports without sufficient domestic demand could lead to material accumulation and price drops, potentially reducing Europe's overall recycling capacity.
In Extremadura, the GreenForum event, supported by Ecolec Waste Hub, highlighted the opportunities of the circular economy. The forum brought together public administrations and recycling companies to discuss transforming waste into resources to drive economic growth and employment. Key discussions included improving the collection of large appliances and fostering a productive model that prioritizes the reuse of raw materials.
