Spain regional tax deductions vary by community

Taxpayers in Spain may face significant differences in their Personal Income Tax (IRPF) returns due to varying regional deductions. Depending on the autonomous community, two identical taxpayers can see differences in deductions of up to 260 euros.

Regional authorities design their own deductions with specific percentages, limits, and requirements. While the Tax Agency applies state-level deductions in tax drafts, taxpayers are responsible for verifying and claiming regional benefits. For example, rental deductions vary significantly between regions like the Canary Islands and Catalonia.

Additionally, several regions offer specific deductions for back-to-school expenses. In Cantabria, families can deduct nursery costs and textbook expenses. Castilla-La Mancha provides deductions for textbooks, language teaching, and even internet access. Castilla y León offers deductions for childcare and nursery school fees, while Extremadura provides a deduction for school supplies for children of compulsory school age.
