Spain rental debt exceeds 3,000 euros on average
According to a report by the Sociedad Española de Alquiler Garantizado (SEAG) for the second quarter of 2026, the average rental debt in Spain has exceeded 3,000 euros. The data shows that 81.9% of rental defaults are resolved through mutual agreements or the voluntary surrender of the property, while 18.1% require judicial proceedings.
The average time to recover a property following a default is approximately 380 days. There are significant regional variations across Spain. Asturias reported the highest average debt per default at 4,629.67 euros, followed by Madrid and Catalonia. Conversely, Extremadura recorded the lowest average debt at 1,702.47 euros.
Recovery times also vary by region. Murcia experienced the longest average recovery period at 526.71 days, whereas Extremadura saw the shortest at 220.60 days.
