Spain report: 40% of mothers left work to provide care

A report titled ‘Estado de las paternidades en España 2026’ reveals that caregiving responsibilities significantly impact professional trajectories, particularly for women. According to the study conducted by CONVIVE Fundación Cepaim and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Equality, 40% of surveyed mothers reported leaving their jobs at some point due to caregiving duties, compared to 26% of fathers.

The research also highlights disparities in working conditions and training. Approximately 55% of mothers reported reducing their working hours for caregiving, while 47% of fathers did the same. Additionally, 46% of mothers stated they delayed or interrupted their professional training because of care responsibilities.

Employment patterns also differ by gender: 85% of fathers in the study work full-time, compared to 60% of mothers. Conversely, 19% of women work part-time, while only 4% of men hold part-time positions. The study, based on a 2025 survey of 500 people and 30 in-depth interviews, notes that the sample is not intended to be nationally or internationally representative.
