Spain reports 106 police and guard officers detained for drug offences since 2021

The Spanish Ministry of the Interior disclosed that 106 members of the State Security Forces and Corps (FCSE) have been detained or investigated for drug‑related crimes between 2021 and 2025. Annual figures show 22 cases in 2021, decreasing to 16 in 2022, rising to 24 in 2023, falling to 20 in 2024 and returning to 24 in 2025. For 2025, the 24 detained were split evenly between the National Police (12) and the Guardia Civil (12).

High‑profile investigations include the provisional imprisonment of Óscar Sánchez Gil, former head of the Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit (UDEF) in Madrid, suspected of colluding with a cocaine‑smuggling organization. Other probes involve senior drug‑unit officials in Valladolid, the Balearic Islands and a network dismantled in Segovia, Madrid and Ávila that led to eight arrests, including two civil guards. A recent March arrest of a civil guard linked to a drug case in Ceuta and southern Andalusia was also noted.
