Spain reports 226 deaths from fires and explosions in 2025

Spain recorded 226 deaths due to fires and explosions in 2025, marking a 3.4% decrease from the 234 fatalities reported in 2024. This represents the second consecutive year of declining mortality rates. According to a report by Fundación Mapfre and the Asociación Profesional de Técnicos de Bomberos (APTB), 190 deaths were caused by fire and 36 by explosions.

Domestic incidents accounted for 165 of the deaths, representing 73% of the total. While mortality decreased, interventions in homes rose by 2.9%, reaching 19,979 cases. The report highlights specific vulnerabilities: men accounted for 69% of fatalities, and individuals over the age of 64 faced the highest mortality rate at 8.74 per million inhabitants. Additionally, living alone was found to increase the risk of death in a home fire by nearly five times.

Among the most significant incidents were an explosion in Asturias that killed five people and a building fire in Cantabria that resulted in three deaths.
