Spain reports 41 gender-based violence fatalities in 2026
Spain is experiencing a significant rise in gender-based violence, with the Ministry of Equality reporting 41 women murdered so far in 2026. Andalusia currently leads the country with 12 victims, accounting for approximately 30% of the national total, followed by the Valencian Community and Madrid.
Recent high-profile cases include the murder of a 33-year-old woman in Benidorm, whose remains were found in an area between Benidorm and Finestrat after being disposed of in suitcases. Other recent fatalities occurred in Seville and Malaga. In many of these instances, including the Benidorm case, there were no prior reports of violence filed by the victims.
Institutional responses have varied. In the Valencian Parliament (Les Corts), political groups held a silent tribute marked by symbolic division, using different banners to express their condemnation. Meanwhile, the Alicante Provincial Council is organizing its 21st Congress on Violence against Women to address prevention and digital violence. The rising death toll has also highlighted the impact on minors, with 29 children orphaned due to gender-based violence in 2026.
