Argentina formal employment falls for 13th consecutive month
Argentina is experiencing a significant contraction in formal employment and business activity. According to data from the Sistema Integrado Previsional Argentino (SIPA), private sector formal employment fell for the 13th consecutive month in June, reaching levels not seen since 2014. The decline is particularly pronounced in the manufacturing and retail sectors, which have lost tens of thousands of jobs over the past year.
In addition to job losses, the country is seeing a reduction in the number of registered employers. Data from the Superintendencia de Riesgos del Trabajo (SRT) indicates that 8,734 companies closed during the first half of 2026. In the province of Buenos Aires, reports show at least 3,165 commercial and productive establishments have ceased operations since late 2023, with La Plata, Tandil, and Junín being among the hardest-hit municipalities.
While most provinces report declines, Neuquén and Río Negro have emerged as exceptions, reporting growth in employment. Conversely, provinces like Tierra del Fuego, Santa Cruz, and La Rioja have seen the sharpest percentage decreases. The economic shift is also impacting wages, with 50% of registered private sector workers earning a monthly take-home pay below $1,385,000.
