Spain reports 441 million euros in agricultural climate damage

Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has reviewed the significant impact of climate-related events on the agricultural sector. Provisional data from January 1 to August 26 indicates that 1.28 million hectares of insured land have been affected by weather extremes, including floods, hail, wind, frost, and intense summer heat. Total expected indemnities are projected at 441 million euros.

Agricultural crops have suffered approximately 326 million euros in damages, specifically affecting herbaceous plants, fruit trees, vineyards, vegetables, citrus, strawberries, red fruits, and nuts. Additionally, wildfires have impacted 16,377 hectares, with expected indemnities of 2.7 million euros. Recent storms in August alone accounted for nearly 50 million euros in insured losses.

In a separate strategic move, Minister Planas is participating in the 55th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) meeting. The summit focuses on mitigating climate change impacts on production sectors, water resources, and coastal communities. Spain aims to strengthen multilateral cooperation and intends to apply for strategic partner status within the PIF in 2025, focusing on food security and sustainable ocean management.
