Spain reports high socioeconomic vulnerability among families of people with intellectual disabilities

A new study on families of people with intellectual disabilities in Spain finds that 60% of households live in socioeconomic vulnerability, with three out of five at risk of poverty and 6.3% in extreme need. The report highlights factors such as low income, female primary caregivers, social isolation, high support needs and limited resources, creating a “spiral of exclusion.”

Separate research shows that about 91% of people with disabilities in Spain encounter barriers to cultural and recreational activities. Physical inaccessibility, lack of staff training, and high costs limit participation. Advocates call for stricter accessibility standards, public funding for inclusive leisure, and broader awareness to improve wellbeing and reduce social isolation.
