Spain reports minimal eye injuries and increased mobility activity after solar eclipse

Following the solar eclipse on August 12, health authorities in Galicia reported no major ocular injuries. Emergency services (061) handled 19 incidents, including falls, anxiety, and fainting, but only eight required hospital transfer. Ophthalmologists at the Complexo Hospitalario Universitario de Santiago de Compostela (CHUS) noted that recent consultations have shown only very mild symptoms, emphasizing that solar retinopathy is a photochemical damage to the retina that may not present immediate pain or itching.

In Madrid, data from Netun Solutions indicated a significant spike in mobility-related activity during the eclipse. The use of connected V16 emergency beacons increased fivefold during the late evening hours compared to the previous week. While the data shows a temporal coincidence with the eclipse, it does not definitively establish the phenomenon as the direct cause of the increased vehicle immobilizations.
