Spain reports new hantavirus case among quarantined cruise passengers

Spain's health ministry confirmed a second positive hantavirus test in a Spanish citizen who was among 14 passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship quarantined in Madrid. The individual, transferred to the high‑level isolation unit at Goya-Ulla Central Defense Hospital, shows no symptoms and is under strict bio‑safety monitoring. The case was identified by routine PCR testing and, according to officials, does not alter the overall risk level for the public or require changes to existing pandemic response measures.

The passengers were brought to the capital on 10 May after the ship experienced a hantavirus outbreak while crossing the Atlantic. Health authorities continue to monitor the cohort, emphasizing early supportive care as the primary treatment for hantavirus infections.
