Spain reports on cemetery expansions and Roman archaeological findings

In Caudete, Spain, construction has begun on 66 new burial niches at the Municipal Cemetery. The project, managed by the Cemetery Department, aims to meet burial needs for 2027 and 2028. The new block, designated as Group 26, will be built using prefabricated reinforced concrete elements and will feature three levels of niches with a ceramic tile roof to maintain aesthetic consistency with existing structures. Officials expect the works to be completed before November 1.

In Astorga, an archaeological controversy persists regarding the remains of a high-ranking Roman dignitary discovered during supermarket construction in July 2025. Reports indicate the lead sarcophagus was opened using mechanical tools without archaeological supervision, leading to the loss of significant scientific data and the original structural context of the tomb. The remains have been moved between various forensic institutes in Ponferrada and Madrid.
