Spain reports separate hospital outbreaks of norovirus and hantavirus

Researchers at the Institute of Health Carlos III and Hospital de Getafe confirmed that two 2024 norovirus outbreaks in the Madrid‑area hospital were unrelated. Genomic sequencing showed the second outbreak was caused by a new introduction of the GII.17[P17] variant, highlighting the need for sensitive molecular testing and continued monitoring of patients who may shed virus after symptoms resolve.

In Madrid’s Hospital Gómez Ulla, a second hantavirus case has developed fever after initially being asymptomatic, while a first patient remains without symptoms. Both patients are being treated in the high‑level isolation unit, with strict discharge criteria and six‑month follow‑up. Authorities are also monitoring 12 other Spanish passengers from the MV Hondius cruise and additional contacts, enforcing quarantine and testing protocols to prevent further spread.
