Global water reserves show regional shifts in Spain and Chile
Water reservoir levels are showing significant variations across Spain and Chile due to shifting weather patterns.
In Spain, national water reserves stand at 64.9% capacity, with 36,370 cubic hectometers stored. This represents the highest level for late August since 2014. However, regional disparities are evident: the Mediterranean basin faces lower levels, with the Segura and Júcar basins at 53.7% and 55.3% respectively, while the Atlantic basin remains higher. Specific reservoirs like Fuensanta in Albacete have seen dramatic recoveries, rising from 12% to 76% capacity in less than a year, whereas others like the Entrepeñas and Buendía reservoirs have seen recent declines.
In Chile, heavy rainfall in northern regions has significantly boosted reservoir levels. In the Antofagasta and Coquimbo regions, several infrastructures report favorable levels, with some seeing substantial increases compared to the previous year. Conversely, in the Maule Region, Colbún S.A. has announced a potential preventive release from the Colbún Reservoir, which is currently at 92.83% capacity, to manage incoming flows from recent frontal systems.
