Spain retirement age to reach 67 by 2027 amid rising delayed retirements
Spain is undergoing significant shifts in its retirement landscape. By 2027, the legal ordinary retirement age will reach 67 years for individuals with fewer than 38 years and 6 months of contributions. Those with more than 38 years and 6 months of contributions will be able to access voluntary early retirement at age 63.
Recent data shows a rise in delayed retirements. In the first half of the year, 12% of the 184,196 new retirement pension registrations in Spain were voluntary delayed retirements. This represents a one percentage point increase from the end of 2025 and a seven percentage point increase compared to 2019. Consequently, the average age of retirement has risen to 65.4 years, up from 64.4 years in 2019.
Labor unions, including Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), suggest that delayed retirement is increasingly becoming a necessity rather than a choice for many workers. This trend is driven by labor precariousness, low wages, and late entries into the workforce, which prevent workers from reaching the contribution years required to secure 100% of their regulatory base. Workers often utilize the 4% annual incentive for delayed retirement to compensate for lower pension amounts.
