Spain rolls out free environmental education programmes for World Environment Day

The regional government of Castilla‑La Mancha launched a free, four‑day programme of environmental‑education activities to mark World Environment Day from 4 to 7 June 2026. The initiative, presented by the regional minister of Sustainable Development Mercedes Gómez, will run in all five provinces and features an escape‑room game for families, nature trails, photography workshops, volunteer sessions and astronomical observation, aiming to turn awareness into concrete climate action.

In the province of Huelva, more than 25 schools are taking part in Andalusian environmental‑education programmes for the same day. Acting Education Minister María del Carmen Castillo highlighted the participation of 20 Huelva schools in the regional Eco‑Schools network, which involves 346 centres across Andalusia and reaches about 132 000 students. Additional projects such as the Aulas Verdes Abiertas programme provide funding and technical support to redesign schoolyards with gardens, shade areas and natural learning spaces, fostering sustainable habits among pupils.

Both initiatives are coordinated by the respective regional authorities and are intended to embed sustainability values in curricula and community life ahead of the international call #PorElClimaYa.
