Spain’s rural cinema initiatives aim to foster culture and environmental awareness

The municipality of Villacarriedo in Cantabria hosted the launch of the “Cine en Comunidad” project, a participatory audiovisual programme that uses film workshops to raise awareness of environmental sustainability and climate change in the Valles Pasiegos region. The initiative, funded by the La Caixa Foundation and backed by the Cantabrian Rural Sustainability Network, will run twelve sessions from July to August, involving local associations and residents to create two short films on landscape conservation and rural climate challenges.

Separately, Spain’s Ministry of Culture and the Ministry for the Ecological Transition have introduced the “Cine Vecino” programme, offering up to 200 small municipalities (population under 10,000) a free digital catalogue of about one hundred independent, documentary, experimental and auteur films per semester for a two‑year period. Selected towns must have basic technical infrastructure and internet access and must organise at least one monthly public screening. Applications are open until 20 June 2026. Both initiatives seek to decentralise cultural access, strengthen community identity and promote environmental awareness in Spain’s rural areas.
