Spain sees 3.4% drop in new company formations in May
The Centre of Statistical Information of the Notary (CIEN) reported that new company formations in Spain fell 3.4% year‑on‑year in May, reaching 11,156 firms. Of these, 8,097 were created with founding capital between €3,000 and €4,000, a 2.9% decline from the same month in 2025, and the average capital per company was €3,015.
The decline was recorded in ten autonomous communities. The sharpest falls were in the Balearic Islands (‑17.1%), Cantabria (‑13.5%) and the Valencian Community (‑11.4%). Other regions with drops included Aragon, Asturias, Catalonia, Castilla‑La Mancha (‑8%), Galicia, the Canary Islands and Navarre.
Conversely, seven communities posted growth. La Rioja led with a 78.1% increase, followed by Extremadura (+30.4%) and Castilla y León (+15.6%). The Basque Country, Murcia, Andalusia and the Community of Madrid also saw modest rises of 11.2%, 11.0%, 1.3% and 0.2% respectively. CIEN noted that data for the final three months of the series remain provisional until full information is available.
