Spain sees decline in traditional bar customs and small drink servings

Traditional Spanish bar customs, such as serving 'cañas' (small beers) and 'chatos' (small glasses of wine), are facing a decline. Modern establishments are increasingly replacing these small servings with larger glasses exceeding 200 or 250 ml, often at higher prices.

The social practice of 'chatear'—gathering at a tavern for small drinks—is disappearing across much of Spain, with the exception of the Basque Country, where the tradition of 'chiquiteo' remains common. Additionally, the physical layout of bars is changing; modern gastrobares and renovated taverns are reducing the use of counters in favor of seated dining, moving away from the traditional standing social culture.
