Argentina rolls out July 2026 fuel tax hike and transport subsidy overhaul

On 1 July 2026 the Argentine government issued a decree raising taxes on liquid fuels. The per‑litre tax on unleaded gasoline increased by $21.192 and the carbon‑dioxide levy by $1.298, while diesel taxes rose by $18.959, $10.266 (regional differential) and $2.161 for carbon. The changes lift retail pump prices and are expected to add pressure to July inflation.

At the same time the administration restructured the national public‑transport subsidy. Resolution 40/2026 freezes the 55 % discount of the Tarifa Social SUBE, switching the calculation from automatic adjustments to a fixed “reference tariff” based on rates as of 30 June 2026. More than 5.5 million users will retain the discount, but any future fare hikes by provinces or municipalities must be financed locally.

Regional impacts include a new fuel‑price update in Rosario where YPF and Shell raised gasoline by up to $0.25 per litre, and a nationwide adjustment of electricity and gas tariffs that added roughly 2.4 % to distribution charges. Combined, these measures affect household energy costs and transport expenses across the country, heightening the cost‑of‑living pressure for Argentine consumers.
