Spain sees rise in 'always‑on' worker syndrome

A growing number of employees in Spain are unable to disconnect from work outside regular hours. Data from the World Economic Forum show that 10% of workers check corporate email compulsively and another 10% do so at least once per hour, while three‑quarters admit they struggle to unplug after the workday.

Cigna warns that constant availability is often interpreted as commitment, making it hard to recognize its impact on well‑being. The firm advises companies to promote genuine disconnection by reducing self‑pressure, sharing responsibilities, improving work planning and safeguarding off‑work periods.

These trends are especially notable during summer vacations, when workers continue to answer emails on the beach or take calls during family meals, undermining true rest and recovery.
