Spain sees rising fruit and vegetable imports despite falling domestic consumption

Spain experienced a 6% increase in the volume and value of fresh fruit and vegetable imports between January and August 2026. Total imports reached 3.15 million tons, valued at 3.839 billion euros. This growth was primarily driven by fruit imports, which rose by approximately 10% in both volume and value, reaching 1.7 million tons.

Among fruits, banana imports increased by 14.1% in volume, while avocado remained the most valuable import at 429 million euros, despite a 3.5% decrease in value. Vegetable imports saw more modest growth, increasing 1.7% in volume to 1.45 million tons, though their total value declined by 3.8% to 1.038 billion euros.

In contrast, domestic consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables in Spanish households fell by 2.4% from January to July 2026, totaling 3.916 billion kilograms. Total expenditure on these products also decreased by 0.8%. While consumption of items like tomatoes, onions, oranges, and apples declined, there were increases in the consumption of watermelon, melon, peach, apricot, cherry, and grapes.
