Spain sees sharp July rise in basic food prices amid inflation pressure

A recent analysis of eight supermarket chains in Spain shows that key fresh items saw notable price hikes in July 2026. Orange loaves rose 7.7% (a cumulative 15% increase over two months), with Aldi recording a 16.2% jump. Golden apples increased 5.5%, led by Alcampo’s 13.7% surge, while conference pears climbed 4.4%, with Eroski up 16.3%. Eggs posted the largest annual gain, up 12.6% on average, and rose 15.4% at Mercadona and Dia. Other modest increases included lentils, sunflower oil, mushrooms and rice, whereas wheat flour, milk, carrots, garlic, lemons, potatoes, lettuce, seedless grapes and onions fell in price.

Industry voices attribute the upward trend to broader inflation. Sebastian Vollrath, managing director of Der Vollrath in Heilbronn, warned that rising fuel, fertilizer and wage costs are squeezing farmers, while consumers face higher energy, rent and living expenses. He said many products have already passed economic profit thresholds, forcing shoppers to cut back on food, a pattern he expects to persist.
