Spain sees sharp rise in grocery costs and lemon prices in 2026

Consumer prices for fresh produce in Spain surged in June 2026, with lemons posting the steepest monthly increase. The average price rose 10.3 % from May to June and was 29.7 % higher than a year earlier, with the Alcampo price jumping from €2.69 /kg to €3.59 /kg – a 33.5 % rise.

Overall household spending on groceries grew 4.2 % in the first five months of 2026 versus the same period in 2025, according to market analyst Circana. Demand accounted for 2.4 % of the increase and inflation 1.8 %. Fresh fruit and vegetables led the spending boost, with fruit purchases up 8.6 %. At the same time, Spain’s citrus harvest is projected to fall 11 % year‑on‑year, driven by weather‑related factors, which underpins the higher fruit prices.

The rise comes as Spain’s economy posted a 2.7 % annual GDP gain in early 2026, while inflation remains around 3.2 %. Private‑label (store‑brand) items continue to dominate, representing over half of grocery outlays.
