Spain sees spike in September divorce filings

In Spain, September has emerged as the month with the highest activity in family courts, accounting for up to 30% of the country's total annual divorces. This seasonal spike typically occurs as summer vacations end and children return to school.

Legal experts suggest that the intensive, uninterrupted coexistence during the summer months acts as a stress test for couples. While underlying issues often exist prior to the holidays, the lack of daily routines and increased time spent together in shared spaces can make long-standing differences undeniable.

José Montero, CEO of Montero de Cisneros Abogados, notes that September is often the moment when decisions that have been maturing for months finally materialize into legal actions, rather than being the direct cause of the separation itself.
