Spain Social Security imposes fines up to 12,000 euros for unregistered self-employed workers

Individuals performing self-employed activities in Spain without registering with the Social Security system face significant financial penalties. Under the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (RETA), failing to register is classified as a serious infraction.

Fines for this violation range from 3,750 euros to a maximum of 12,000 euros. In addition to these penalties, the Social Security administration requires the payment of all unpaid social security contributions dating back to the first day the activity commenced.

The obligation to register applies to any person conducting economic activities on a habitual, personal, and direct basis with the intent to profit, regardless of the level of income generated or the frequency of invoicing.
