Spain solar sector loses 12,000 jobs in one year

The photovoltaic sector in Spain has seen a significant decline in employment, with over 12,000 jobs lost in a single year. According to data from the industry association Unef, total employment in the solar sector fell to 134,708 in 2025, down from a peak of 152,418 in 2022.

This downturn is attributed to market conditions and electricity market rules rather than external regulatory factors. The most severe impact has been felt by producers, who accounted for seven out of every ten jobs lost, dropping from 67,335 employees in 2024 to 59,914 in 2025. Other affected areas include engineering and installation services.

In response to the risk of default, the industry association has requested government assistance in the form of loans backed by the Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO).
