Spain steps up traffic police checks and tightens road rules

Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has launched a nationwide campaign of intensified alcohol and drug controls on roads, lasting until 19 July. The move follows data showing alcohol involvement in 28 % of fatal crashes in 2024 and a rise of 273 deaths linked to alcohol‑related accidents, up 9 % from 2023. Police checkpoints are being deployed on highways and in towns, with nearly 89 % of positive alcohol tests detected during routine stops. Drivers testing above 0.25 mg/L face fines of €500 and loss of licence points; higher levels or drug positives can attract €1,000 fines.

In parallel, Spain approved a comprehensive update of traffic regulations that will take effect in October 2026. The new rules cover pedestrians, cyclists, e‑scooter users and motorcyclists, introducing mandatory helmets, reflective vests for night e‑scooter use, and a minimum age of 15 for e‑scooter riders. Fines start at €200 for violations such as crossing against a red light or riding without a helmet. Additional measures require drivers to create clear lanes for emergency vehicles and reduce speed when approaching accidents.
