Spain swimming pools targeted by ‘brown challenge’ social media trend
A social media trend known as the ‘reto marrón’ (brown challenge) is causing significant disruption and health concerns in Spanish swimming pools. Primarily involving children and adolescents, the trend involves intentionally defecating in pools to film the resulting chaos, police response, and facility evacuations for social media engagement.
Reports indicate hundreds of such incidents have occurred this year, following approximately 300 cases last year. In the city of Burgos, authorities have initiated fine proceedings against the parents of four children, aged 11 to 13, who were observed defecating in the El Plantío swimming pool. The parents face potential fines of 3,000 euros each, alongside claims for damages to cover cleaning and disinfection costs.
Authorities note that perpetrators have used inventive methods to avoid detection, such as concealing waste in plastic bags inside swimwear. While fines can reach up to 20,000 euros and include multi-year bans from facilities, the trend continues to impact municipal pools across the country.
