Spain tallies 27 gender‑based murders in 2026, urges heightened alert

In 2026, Spain has recorded 27 women killed in gender‑based violence, bringing the national total to 1,368 since records began in 2003. The murders in Málaga and Alicante—both confirmed as intimate‑partner killings—prompted a minute of silence in the town of Telde and a public condemnation by officials.

Sub‑delegate David Broceño in Ciudad Real called for a “maximum social alert”, noting a 47% rise in gender‑based violence reports in June (112 complaints versus 76 in May). He announced intensified summer policing by the National Police and Guardia Civil to protect victims, and urged citizens to intervene when they suspect abuse. Hotline 016 and emergency numbers were highlighted as resources for victims and their families.
