Spain targets 100 million tourists by 2026

Spain’s tourism ministry says the country is on track to reach a symbolic 100 million international visitors in 2026, following 96.8 million arrivals in 2025 and a 3.4 % rise in the first quarter of 2026 that added 26.6 million tourists. The sector accounts for more than 12 % of Spain’s GDP and generated €134 billion in spending last year, with an average daily outlay of €189 per visitor and hotel rates around €207 per night.

Minister of Industry and Tourism Jordi Hereu stresses a “calm growth” approach, calling for tighter local regulation of short‑term rentals and a shift toward less‑visited regions to ease pressure on cities such as Barcelona, Madrid and Palma. Barcelona’s mayor has pledged to ban tourist apartments by 2028, while regional authorities adjust taxes and capacity limits.

Spain is also promoting its safety and stability as a draw for travelers shifting away from the eastern Mediterranean amid Middle‑East tensions. The government hopes the combination of regulated growth, diversified destinations and a reputation for security will sustain the required 3.5 % annual increase to hit the 100‑million mark.
