Spain tax regulations for family support and education

Taxpayers in Spain face specific regulations regarding family support and educational expenses. In Galicia, families can claim deductions for school supplies and textbooks for primary, secondary, and special education. This deduction allows for the recovery of 15% of costs, up to a maximum of 105 euros per child, provided the family's per capita income does not exceed 30,000 euros. This benefit is incompatible with other public scholarships covering the same costs.

Additionally, regarding financial transfers to parents, the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT) distinguishes between mandatory maintenance and taxable donations. Payments made to cover essential needs—such as food, housing, clothing, and medical assistance—are considered legal obligations under the Civil Code and are not taxed. However, if transfers exceed these basic needs or serve to increase the recipient's wealth, they may be classified as donations, which are subject to the Inheritance and Gift Tax regulated by autonomous communities.
