Spain tests jellyfish barriers and adds new beach buoys

Researchers from the Gijón Aquarium, the University of Oviedo and the Gijón Oceanographic Center, supported by the municipal Environment Department, began testing two types of anti‑contamination barriers after Portuguese jellyfish (caravelas) washed ashore on San Lorenzo and El Arbeyal beaches. The plan involves recovering and rehabilitating collected specimens in the aquarium before releasing them into a test basin surrounded by the barriers, to assess their effectiveness on calm versus open, high‑wave beaches.

Meanwhile, the municipality of Cangas received a shipment of buoys to mark 18 local beaches after a new contractor, Ares Servicios y Obras, was appointed following a failed tender. The buoys will be installed across multiple sites, including Rodeira, Areamilla, Melide, and others, to improve navigation safety and beach organization during the summer season.
