Spain to ban overtaking on highways during heavy snow
Spain is preparing to implement new traffic regulations on highways and expressways to enhance safety during heavy snowfall. Under the proposed amendments to the General Traffic Regulations, drivers will be prohibited from overtaking if snow conditions significantly complicate traffic flow.
When these conditions are activated, motorists must remain in the right-hand lane. On roads with three or more lanes in one direction, the lane immediately adjacent to the rightmost lane may also be used. Remaining left-hand lanes will be reserved for emergency services and winter maintenance vehicles. The measure aims to prevent dangerous maneuvers, avoid traffic blockages, and ensure clear passage for emergency responders and snow removal equipment. Violators of these rules face a fine of 200 euros. The restriction is not automatic for all snowfall but will be triggered based on the specific impact of weather conditions on road safety and traffic flow.
