Spain to demolish San Andrés Fishermen's Guild in Tenerife
The Spanish government has announced plans to demolish the San Andrés Fishermen's Guild and an adjacent restaurant located near Las Teresitas beach in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the Directorate General of Coasts, cited the building's state of “abandonment, degradation, and vandalism” as the primary reason for the demolition.
The guild, which operated for 40 years, was dissolved by the Government of the Canary Islands in 2025 due to a lack of active fishermen. The building was previously sealed by urban planning authorities five years ago. The state intends to tender the demolition works, estimated at 42,439 euros, following a public information period.
In response, the El Pescador Neighborhood Association has filed an official opposition to the demolition. The group is calling for a suspension of the works to explore alternatives for conservation and reuse, such as transforming the site into a Fishing Museum or a Maritime Culture Interpretation Center. They have requested the formation of a working group involving local administrations and residents to study these alternatives.
