Spain to hold early general elections on November 29

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called for early general elections in Spain, scheduled for November 29, 2026. This decision follows the rejection of two emergency decrees by the Spanish Congress intended to address the national housing crisis. The housing shortage, estimated by the Banco de España to be around 750,000 homes, has become a central political issue, exacerbated by high rents and recent evictions.

In response to the crisis, Spanish unions UGT and CCOO, alongside the Tenants' Union, have organized a general strike for November 11. Political maneuvering is also underway, with Ada Colau set to lead the Frente Amplio list in Barcelona, incorporating the Podemos party. Meanwhile, the postal service, Correos, has opened the period for citizens to request mail-in voting, which remains available until November 19.

The upcoming elections will see various regional dynamics, such as the distribution of seats in the Canary Islands and the electoral preparations of parties like VOX in Castilla y León and Compromís in the Valencian Community.
